Holmes, Joshua Anderson "Josh"

ELBERON - Joshua 'Josh' Anderson Holmes, 64, was called to his heavenly home on Friday, June 16, 2006, at Riverside Regional Medical Center after a long bout of sickness. He was born Sept. 11, 1941, to the late Samuel and Emma Claggett Holmes in Isle of Wight County. Joshua retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard after more than 20 years of employment. He was also a member of the Local 272 Pipefitter's Union, where he spent many years as a steward and vice president. He also worked at Newport News Shipbuilding for many years. He gave his life to Christ at a young age and joined First Gravel Hill Baptist Church, Smithfield. Josh's favorite pastime was singing, which he did until his health started to fail. Josh sang with the Starlight Gospel Singers from Surry, and at many churches. Josh was proud to be a husband, father and papa. He always put his family first. Even through all his sickness, he wanted to make sure that you were all right. Josh was a fighter, from his first illness years ago until his last breath Friday morning. He fought every illness or problem that came his way. Whenever you needed him, he was there to help. Joshua leaves to cherish his memory, his loving and caring wife of 40 years, Theresa Evans Holmes; a son, Kelvin (Vanessa) Holmes of Smithfield, and daughter, Angela (Larry Jr.) Charity of Surry; four grandchildren, Darius, Kiara, Dionna and Marcus; three step-grandchildren, Destiné, Tariq and Isaiah; two brothers, William and Elmer (Eula); two sisters, Eunice Holmes and Barbara Robertson, all of Smithfield; a devoted and lifetime friend, Randolph Johnson of Portsmouth; six brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law; and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral service will be held at noon Wednesday, June 21, at First Gravel Hill Baptist Church, Smithfield. Interment will follow at Mount Moriah Cemetery, Elberon. Viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Poole's Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church. Arrangements by Poole's Funeral Home, Sabrina Hardy, Funeral Directress, 757-357-4742.
