My Dad was known throughout his life as "Reds"and "Bounce" (the former for his hair color and the latter for all the dance contests he won in his youth; there was a song called "The Jersey Bounce"). Dad served in WW II in both the Navy AND the Army.
Born James Aloysius HARVEY, he was the third of four children born to Patrick Aloysius Harvey and Margaret Elizabeth Featherbay. He was baptized at the now closed St. Gregory's Church (1895-1981) on February 22, 1925 by the Reverend Charles W. Vodges.
After his parents split up - and where my grandmother went is still a mystery to this very day - the kids wound up in the custody of the Catholic Children's Bureau. After living in a series of foster homes, my dad was taken in by a childless couple, James and Annabella Shay Callen, where his older brother John was living. When Mr. Callen died, my dad wanted Mrs. Callen to have his allotment checks from the service. He was told that was not possible because he was not a relative, so he allowed himself to be adopted at age 20 in March 1945.
He and my Mom, Teresa Stewart, married on July 19, 1952 at St. Gabriel's Church in Grays Ferry. They had six children (of whom I am the eldest). They divorced in 1980.
Dad worked for the ACME Markets as a warehouseman for over thirty years, most of those years being spent at the 55th & Upland warehouse in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia.
Dad died at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital of sepsis and aspiration pneumonia. His Requiem Mass was held at St. Gabriel's. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Shea Funeral Home at 29th & Dickinson Streets.
