Victor Antoine Edouard Lalo was born in Lille, France. When he was 16 his father, a former officer in Napoleon's army, disowned him after he chose to pursue a musical career, and he struggled to pay his tuition at the Paris Conservatory. For much of his life he supported himself playing viola in a string quartet and through private teaching. Unskilled at musical politics and unwilling to compromise his talent, he had to wait until he was past 50 to get his music performed. He was subsequently named an Officer of the Legion of Honor.
