Composer. His music combines Classical restraint with a Romantic's taste for the exotic. The "Symphonie Espagnole" (1875), for violin and orchestra, is his most popular work. Written for the virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate, it is not really a symphony but a cross between a suite and a concerto. It also reflects Lalo's Spanish ancestry. His other works include a Violin Concerto (1874), Cello Concerto (1880), the "Norwegian Rhapsody" (1880), the ballet "Namouna" (1882), and the opera "The King of Ys" (1888). Victor Antoine Edouard Lalo was born in Lille, France. When he was 16 his father, a former officer in Napoleon's army, disowned him after he chose to pursue a musical career, and he struggled to pay his tuition at the Paris Conservatory. For much of his life he supported himself playing viola in a string quartet and through private teaching. Unskilled at musical politics and unwilling to compromise his talent, he had to wait until he was past 50 to get his music performed. He was subsequently named an Officer of the Legion of Honor.
