Jim "Jeff" Short was born on December 9, 1926, in Lucky, Arkansas, to Alvie Sam Short & Laura Mae Vaughn Short. He attended Glenwood High School in Glenwood, Arkansas, and served in the US Army as Motor-pool Sargent, based at Clark Air Force Base in Manila, The Philippines. He married Carolyn Joyce Ashley, daughter of Benjamin and Janet Goff Ashley, on January 14, 1947. They moved to Boonville, California, in July of 1950, where Jeff began work in the booming logging industry, driving a truck. Their son, Jimmy Short, was born on September 9, 1956. In 1962, Jeff & Carolyn purchased a Union Oil gas station in Boonville, transforming it into Jeff's Union Service. They soon purchased the adjoining bulk plant, where their delivery trucks transported gas & oil to logging companies in the more rural areas of Mendocino County. In later years, they changed to Chevron products, thus becoming Jeff's Chevron Service. Jeff retired in 1988, but continued to assist Carolyn with the operations of the businesses until his passing on May 5, 1992. Carolyn eventually sold the business in 1997 and still resides in Boonville. Their son Jimmy Short, lives in Sacramento, California.
