Author and Naturalist. He was born on the family farm near Roxbury, New York. As he worked and played around his rural home, he devloped a keen appreciation for nature. After college, he moved to Washington D.C. where he worked as a Department of Treasury clerk. There he began writing essays about the beautiful natural surroundings of his far away home. While in Washington, he also became acquainted with the famous poet, Walt Whitman. Whitman encouraged him to pursue a career in writing. He followed the poet's advice and, in 1867, his first published book, "Notes on Walt Whitman as Poet and Person" (the first ever published biography of Walt Whitman) was printed. Four years later his first collection of essays was published. "Wake-Robin" was the first of what became a twenty-three volume work which contained his observations and ideas on nature, travel, literary criticism and philosophy. He is credited with being a pioneer in the nature writing genre. Over one and a half million copies of his books were sold. He was buried on his eighty-fourth birthday at the foot of a rocky hill where he played as a child.
