Aunt Fannie DIED AT THE AGE OF 114 YEARS OLD~

Excerpts Taken from the News-Pilot February 4, 1998 and The Daily Breeze Thursday May 27, 1999.
By: Donna Littlejohn

Born the year the gasoline powered automobile was invented, Frances Johns was known as the oldest resident of San Pedro when she died Monday at the age of 114. She attributed her longevity to living a "good life." "I only go to the doctor once a year," she said in 1998. "I'm not sick."

Born Frances Campbell on a farm in Scotts, Arkansas on Feb 3, 1885, Johns was the ninth of 14 children. She remembers picking cotton as a girl. Democrat Grover Cleveland was in the White House. Aunt Fannie came to San Pedro in 1931.

Johns married Lee Jackson on June 25, 1910. The couple had 2 children, Leo and Leanna. Leanna died in infancy. The couple later divorced and she came to San Pedro on June 15, 1931, with her son Leo following. Aunt Fannie was a member of Mount Sinai Baptist Church. Her second husband, Harry Johns, whom she married in 1941, died January 15, 1955.

Her family included her son Leo, 3 granddaughters Alma Jean, Audrey Lee, and Helen Dolores. She had 7 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

I remember Aunt Fannie for her wit. She was so out going and out spoken for her age. I remember when my grandmother passed, they didn't tell her right away because they thought she wouldn't be able to handle it. Then one day when I went over to see her with my dad, she just came out and asked us, in fact she told us that "Nora has passed." She knew when my grandmother hadn't called her, or went by. My dad and I left in tears. My dad Dripper, she would call Skipper. And because it was Aunt Fannie, it was o.k. My dad just had a new name. Aunt Fannie is missed dearly. Yet I know her and my G'ma have met up, and are probably up in heaven teaching everyone how to play Pokeno.

Taken from her obituary: About my life~ Frances "Fannie" Campbell was born to William and Jane (Dunn) Campbell on February 3, 1885 in Scotts, Arkansas. Frances spent her childhood in a loving Christian family of 13 siblings. Ed, Maggie, William, Bud, Mack, Annie, Lula, Gertrude, Sarah, Robert, Crock, Ada, and Isaiah All preceding her in death. Frances was a sickly child and spent much time reading and learning the accounting business for her father's farm. Which was her contribution towards chores on the farm. Frances loved school and excelled easily through the grades. She attended (what is now) Philander-Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas. Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in the Scotts area, was the family's affiliation. When a child, she was chosen many times to deliver the welcome address to hundreds of people in attendance at the National State Convention receiving standing ovations. Frances met and married Lee Jackson on June 10, 1910. Two children were born to this union, a daughter, Leanne, (died in infancy), and a son Leo. In 1931 Frances left Arkansas and moved to San Pedro, CA. She found work and saved her money and sent for her son Leo in 1935. The two were a team for many years. Frances worked in the fish canneries on Terminal Island, 18 years. There she met and married Harry Johns (who proceeded her in death). Frances attended Mt. Sinai Baptist Church and was an active member of the Missionary Society until failing health limited her attendance. However, for the last 2 years she hosted a missionary circle in her home every third Monday of the month until her death. The house next door to the church was the direction often given to many visitors wishing to locate her. Her door was always open to anyone needing a helping hand (including the church). Her knowledge on city, state and world affairs was broad and current.

Frances Campbell Jackson-Johns departed from this life on Monday May 24, 1999. Left to cherish memories of her are: son, Leo Jackson, daughter in law, Lorraine Jackson. Granddaughters: Alma J. Jackson, and Helen D. Moore. Grandson in law: Fred Underwood Great Great Grandchildren: Kevin Thornton, Charlotte Moore-Barnes, Gary Moore, Michael Moore, Anthony Rideout, Andre Martin and Maria Underwood.
