War correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune. He was the first American newspaperman killed in action. He was aboard a British bomber, which went down in bad weather, on the Velji Garach Mountain, killing all aboard.

The five crew members of the bomber were as follows:
Pilot Officer William Graham Bennett, Sgt. Frederick Lawrence Savage, Sgt. Geoffrey Bernard Hawksley, Sgt. Geoffrey Green, and Sgt. John A. Palmer-Samborne.

Barnes was originally buried in the Podgorica Military Cemetery.
