Born at Ft. Snelling, MN. Grand daughter of Mahp ya Wiscaste (Cloudman) and Canpadutawin (Red Cherry woman). Daughter of Wakaninajiwan (She who stands Sacred) or Mary Eastman, first wife of Gen. Seth Eastman, the artist. Her full native name was Wakantanwin and her Christian name was Mary Nancy Eastman. Seth Eastman left when she was 10 months old on 19 Jan 1832 to teach at West Point, NY. Returning 10 years later to find that his wife and her mother attempted to sell the 8 year old for a horse to Rev. Samuel Pond. In another attempt to marry her off to the highest bidder Nancy planned to elope with Many Lightenings, whom she later married and had 6 children with. The last became Dr. Charles A. Eastman. Many Lightenings became Jacob Eastman, taking his wife's family name.
