China Relief Expedition (Boxer Rebellion) Medal of Honor Recipient. He was serving as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps when he earned his Medal. His citation reads: In action during the battle near Tientsin, China, 13 July 1900. Although under heavy fire from the enemy, Sutton assisted in carrying a wounded officer from the field of battle. The Medal was awarded on July 19, 1901.
