Merlin (aka 'Snausage') came into our lives as a puppy of 6 weeks old. He was a pure bred Sharpei, coal black coat and tounge, and a perfect curl on his tail. He was the most gentle and sweet dog that I have ever met. When he was teething, we fed him chuncks of 2X4s, one right after another. He grew into a huge dog weighing 80lbs, which is unusually large for his particular breed. He loved bread, and got two slices every day. He was always faithful, always loyal, and always loving. Judy always told him he was her baby and I called him Baby too. I remember a little wrinkled black ball that was placed upon the filing cabinet at work. Man was he ever heavy for such a little guy. Merlin was really a live wire compared to Charlie. He gave Charlie a hard time as he did not want to play very much. We had an ottoman that he word terrorize Charlie and then dart under the ottoman to escape from him.
Merlin was quite the dog. He dearly loved waking Sara up on the weekends always around 8:00 AM. She knew he was coming just by the way he was breathing and snorting. I remember times when Travis would scream at Merlin for drinking water in the middle of the night. "You know it takes a lot of water to run a snausage." Merlin and Charlie did real well together. Merlin taught both Charlie and Marble the "pet me" sign. Merlin did have a temper of sorts. The first time we left him home with Mike to go to Las Vegas he was still pretty little but he managed somehow to get up on the King size bed and wet on it several times showing just how put out he was at us for leaving him home. Merlin was a very fast runner. He ran at least 30 miles per hour. He also ran so fast he broke the cement bird bath. Merlin was so cool as he would lay so regal like he was a statue. He also stood so straight and tall. He had impecable posture. Merlin was always very adventuresome. He often esccaped and it was up to us to find him. One morning he was lost for four hours. He was very tired and thirsty whe we finally found him. Consequently he did not run off too much as that for awhile. The only vehicle Merlin really stopped and came to was the Camry as that was "Momma's " vehicle. I never spanked him I just scoled him. It was the following fall that Travis went off to Fort Hays State Univeristy. Merlin really missed him. He loved it so when he would come back home especially with his laundry as he would stick his nose into and just enjoy sniffing. Merlin did not get mad at Travis for leaving however he did get mad at Sara for leaving when she moved out after graduation and it took about an hour each time for him to even go up to her and Justin. One Thanksgiving we had all of the kids home and just after saying grace Merlin quickly grabbed one piece of Turkey and thus began his ritual of hainvg turkey at Thanksgivng and Christmas. Merlin was very accepting of Travis bringing Leslie home with him. He really loved it when they brought a very small baby named Sapphira home to meet him. He loved it so much he just could not get enough of licking Sapphira's head. Merlin was a snorer. Merlin was so lost when Charlie died July 10, 2001. Sara decided that he needed a playmate. That is when she took me to the Dodge City Animal Shelter and we found Marble. He never made Marble feel unwelcome. Merlin loved his "oil and pow-wee" time. He was a gentle dog. He never met a stranger. We loved to see people's reaction when they came to our door for the first time. They always backed away from the front door immediately after catching a glimpse of Merlin. As a pup Merlin loved to look out at the back fence. He bit off the top of the fence so that he could look out. He also loved hanging out behind the lean too. Merlin was Judy's alarm dog after the kids all left. He woke her up by the way he shook his head and did his special breathing or licking my hand. The last morning he woke me up so gently. He tongue caressed my hand ever so gently. I immediately got up and let them out to potty. He seemed to be doing better after being sick the night before. My poor baby then met me at the back door that one last time to say his final farewell. He passed away 15 minutes after I arrived home. It was the hardest evening I have had.

We miss you sweet Merlin. God bless you and rest well.
