Chalkley (Chalk) Beeson, seventh child of Sameul and Martha Beeson was born in Salem, Ohio. When he was 19 years old, he left home and moved to Denver, Colorado in 1868. While playing in an orchestra there, he met the Grand Duke Alexis of Russia and agreed to guide him, General Phil Sheridan and General George Custer on a buffalo hunt near Kit Carson, Colorado.
Chalk and his wife, Ida Gause (m Jul 17,1876) made their home 2 miles South of Dodge City where Chalk ranched.
He organized the Dodge City Cowboy Band in 1878. They played in the Benjamin Harrison Parade in Washington, D.C. March 4, 1889.
Chalk was one of the original owners of the world famous Long Branch Saloon along with his partner William Harris from 1878 to 1883.
He served as Ford County Sheriff for two terms, 1892-1896 and twice elected to the Kansas State Legislature.
Chalk died from injuries substained from an accident while on horseback.
