Daniel W.P. Hess, 46, of Mount Joy, died unexpectedly in a farming accident on Wednesday, July 2, 2014. Born in Ephrata, he was the ninth and youngest child of Joseph and Lois Hess, of Mount Joy. Dan faithfully loved and served his wife, Gloria Petersheim Hess, with whom he celebrated 21 years of marriage. He was the devoted and committed father to five children: Jed, Janaya, Peter, Thad, and Sophia.

Dan was a graduate of Lancaster Mennonite High School and furthered his education with several Youth With A Mission schools in Virginia, Chile, New Zealand, and India. In addition, he took courses at Zwemer Institute of Muslim Studies and traveled to colleges across the United States mobilizing students to go into overseas missions. After his marriage to Gloria, they received further YWAM training in Australia and then began an overseas assignment with Frontiers in several Central Asian countries. Dan helped to found and run the successful micro-credit program that helped single mothers start businesses growing roaster chickens. He loved the people with whom he worked and longed to be able to return someday.

Dan's other work included hydraulic repair, drywall contracting and most recently part-owner and farm manager for Chickies Creek Farms, LLC, a chicken layer operation.

Dan was passionate in his worship of his Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. In recent years he was an avid listener and participant in all things related to the 24/7 worship & prayer of the International House of Prayer in Kansas City. He was a long-time member of Christ the King Community Church located in Centerville, PA where he was actively involved.

He loved the outdoors and was more comfortable bare foot than shod with shoes. He regularly picked wildflower bouquets for Gloria and enjoyed all aspects of agriculture and gardening. He could often be found spending time with his children participating in many activities including reading aloud great stories, bike riding, sand-castle building, and anything in between. Dan had lots of new ideas and was always looking for ways to improve present ways of doing things.

Surviving in addition to his wife, parents, and children are eight brothers and sisters: Deb married to Galen Kipfer, Hadley, NY; Elaine married to Bob Linder, Mount Joy, PA; Joe Hess married to Linda, Mount Joy, PA; Rachael married to Bruce Webster, Brownstown, PA; Sue married to Yutaka Kawase, Louisburg, KS; Jim Hess married to Rosemary, Broadway, VA; Dean Hess married
to Maryanne, Baltimore, MD; and Don Hess married to Kathy, Lancaster, PA. In addition, he is survived by 33 Hess nieces and nephews, 16 Petersheim nieces and nephews, 57 Hess 1st-cousins, 11 Wert 1st-cousins, and a "semi-adopted" brother, Seth Pobee married to Sherry, of Lancaster.

A funeral service honoring Dan's life will be held at Mount Joy Mennonite Church, 320 Musser Road, Mount Joy on Monday, July 7, 2014 at 2 PM. A viewing will be held at the church on Sunday, July 6, 2014, from 2 PM - 5 PM and again on Monday at the church before the service from 1 PM - 2 PM.
