Mayor of New Orleans, 1978-1986. A leading civil rights advocate, he was the first black mayor of New Orleans, serving from 1978 to 1986. He was the father of Marc Morial, a subsequent New Orleans mayor. His body was moved in 2014 to a new family mausoleum in Saint Louis Cemetery Number 3, having been originally buried in Saint Louis Cemetery Number 1. He has a cenotaph at his original burial location.
