Artist, Professional Football Player. He is regarded by many as being one of the most revered African American artists in the second half of the twentieth century. Born Ernest Eugene Barnes, Jr. in Durham, North Carolina, he attended Hillside High School. After playing collegiate football at North Carolina Central University, he was chosen by the Baltimore Colts in the 10th round of the 1960 NFL Draft. However, he would join the New York Titans in the newly formed American Football League. He played for five seasons (1960 to 1964) in the AFL, appearing in 43 career games at the offensive guard and offensive tackle positions with the Titans, San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos. After his football career, Barnes fulfilled his aspirations of becoming an artist. Among his memorable works are "Beauty of the Ghetto", "Storyteller", "The Graduate" and "Sugar Shack", which appeared on Marvin Gaye's 1976 album "I Want You" and could be seen on the television series "Good Times". His many works could be seen in galleries throughout the country.
