JANE ELIZABETH COOKE HARLAN was born in Laurens District, SC.

She was the daughter of NANCY CRAIG and JOSEPH HARLAN, natives of South Carolina.

Jane's mother, Nancy, died at childbirth, and her father brought her and the other children to the REPUBLIC OF TEXAS in 1837.

Jane married LOGAN ALMAREN STROUD in MAY 19, 1842 in Robertson county, Texas.

They established a large plantation on the NAVASOTA RIVER which they named 'PLEASANT RETREAT.' Jane was the mother of 11 children. Also took in and raised orphan children of relatives..
