Playwright, Screenwriter. He is best known for the 1961 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama "All the Way Home", which became a Tony Award nominated stage production and a 1963 film adaptation. Born in Steubenville, Ohio, and raised in New Rochelle, New York, after serving in the United States Army during World War II, he studied at Amherst College and later Yale Drama School and Columbia University. He performed in the 1949 Broadway production "At War With the Army" just prior to beginning his writing career during the early years of television for such programs as "Goodyear Television Playhouse", "Playhouse 90", "Armchair Theatre" and the mini-series "The Adams Chronicles". Among his motion picture script credits are "Dear Heart" (1964) and "Up the Down Staircase" (1967).
