James T. (Matt) Dillon was born to James T. (Sr.) and Mary Dillon in Grimes, Iowa, where he was raised with older sister Margaret and younger sister Dorothy on the family farm. Both of his sisters proceeded him in death.

James met and married Beverly "Arlene" Kinberg in 1944; Arlene preceded her husband in death in 1991 after 46 years of marriage. They settled in Fairfield, California in 1962, where they raised their six children with an Air Force salary and a strong Irish Catholic faith.

James gave 29 years of his life in military service of our country, beginning in the U.S. Army Air Corps and retiring from the U.S. Air Force, he was a veteran of World War II, the Korean conflict and Vietnam. His duties as a flight engineer carried him to the four corners of this world flying KC-97s, C-133s and C-5s. James retired as a senior master sergeant from the Air Force in 1974, after which he studied for and found work as a Grade 3, water treatment operator with the city of Napa, California, where he retired a second time after 10 years.

In 1993, James met and married Dovie "Nell" Dawson, they spent the next 12 years together before her death in February, 2006.

The storied life of James T. (Matt) Dillon included associations with The Knights of Columbus, Veterans Auxiliary, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Moose Lodge Local 861, and Eagles Lodge 4113.

James enjoyed camping in his motor home, hanging at the lodge "telling lies," watching the A's and the 49ers and doing a good crossword puzzle.

Inurnment was at St. Alphonsus Catholic Cemetery in Fairfield, California.
