James met and married Beverly "Arlene" Kinberg in 1944; Arlene preceded her husband in death in 1991 after 46 years of marriage. They settled in Fairfield, California in 1962, where they raised their six children with an Air Force salary and a strong Irish Catholic faith.

James retired as a senior master sergeant from the Air Force in 1974, after which he studied for and found work as a Grade 3, water treatment operator with the city of Napa, California, where he retired a second time after 10 years.
In 1993, James met and married Dovie "Nell" Dawson, they spent the next 12 years together before her death in February, 2006.
