Civil War Union Army Soldier. He was mustered in as a Private in Company G, 23rd Pennsylvania (Three-Month) Volunteer Infantry on April 21, 1861. Promoted to Sergeant on July 1, 1861, he was mustered out on July 31, 1861 when the term of enlistment for his regiment expired.
On september 5, 1861 he was mustered in as a Sergeant in Company D, 88th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and received promotions to 1st Sergeant on June 1, 1862 and 2nd Lieutenant on December 1, 1862.
In August 28, 1863 he was discharged from the 88th Pennsylvania to accept a commission of Captain and commander of Company A, 6th United States Colored Troops. He served in the 6th USCT through the end of the war, and received a commission of Lieutenant Colonel on June 1, 1865. However, he was never mustered into that rank, and was discharged as a Captain on September 20, 1865.
He was wounded in action twice - once at the August 1862 Battle of Second Bull Run, and once at the September 1864 Battle of Chapin's Farm during the Petersburg Campaign. His latter wounds caused the amputation of his right leg.
He was elected as the 17th Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic in 1883. He also was the author of the "History of the Grand Army of the Republic", published in 1888.
