An abandoned Bichon Frisé-Poodle mix, Lucky Lou Zakrzewski was adopted on May 17, 2000 from Citizens For Animal Protection (CAPS) in Houston, Texas. Thought to be between 8 and 10 years old, he was a frightened, "over-corrected" dog who had lived his entire life in a cage, used as a puppy mill stud.
Through the patience, love and determination of both Lucky and his new family, he became an inspiration all who met him. Lucky was a devoted companion to Edward James Zakrzewski, who was stricken Alzheimer's Disease. Ed was able to spend most of the rest of his life at home, relatively in the present and manageable. Doctors attributed this in large part to Lucky's love and emotional care.
In the last two years of his life, Lucky brought home 5 stray cats, including a "nurse" for himself (Roxanne, a runaway), a companion (Angel-Ah, another abuse victim) for Ed's wife, a friend (Chi-Chi, an abandoned cat) for Roxanne and two feral cats (Frankie Lee and Mamma Kitty).
Lucky was spent his retirement years eating roasted chicken, "singing", going for walks with his cats and charming everyone he met. The week before his death from kidney failure, he alerted his family that Mamma Kitty had been accidentally trapped in his neighbor's roof during renovations. Mamma Kitty passed away in January 2014, a few weeks after Roxanne. She had been cared for by our family and other neighbors for 14 years.
