Violinist. She was the first instrumentalist to record on Victor Red Seal Records in 1904. She debuted in New York in 1885 at the age of 18. She studied in Europe and was ranked among the top violinists of the world. She was also active in the Women's Rights movements of the early 1900's. She expressed her deep American roots in her transcriptions of "Deep River", "Four American Folk Songs" and "Nobody Know's the Trouble I've Seen". Maud Powell was the niece of John Wesley Powell, Naturalist and Grand Canyon explorer.
