Herndon was one of the "Long Nine" and was elected State Senator in 1836. He was then in the Land Office in Springfield from 1842 to 1849. Archer Herndon was the founder of the pioneer Herndon family of Sangamon county and the father of William H. Herndon, Abraham Lincoln's law partner. He had three other sons: Archer Gray Jr., Nathaniel Forquer and Eliot Bohannon. He also had a sister, Frances Fanna Herndon, who was married to Elisha James. She was born in Virginia in 1790.
