Son of William Henry and Nancy Kirtley Herndon.

John Rowan & his brother, James A. owned and operated a store in New Salem, Menard County, Illinois. The store was later purchased by a Mr. Berry & Abraham Lincoln. They were cousins of William Henry Herndon, law partner and biographer of Abraham Lincoln. Prior to his marriage to Julia, J.R. was married to an Elizabeth Graham of Kentucky. They were married 20 Dec 1828 in Green County, Kentucky. They settled in New Salem and had 2 children. She was accidently shot and died on 18 Jan 1833. Where she was laid to rest remains a mystery. She was the daughter of Jeremiah and Mary Graham of Kentucky and sister of Mentor Graham of Menard County.

His brother, James Allen Herndon, who was born in 1812 in Kentucky died in April, 1886, at the age of 74, in West Point, St. Albans Township, Hancock County, Illinois while visiting with family and friends in Illinois. He was buried there on Saturday, April 10, 1886. Cemetery was not given in the article other than it was at that place. Quincy Whig, Adams County, Illinois. Thursday April 15, 1886, page 8.
