U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Beloit College Wisconsin, in 1906 and taught school in Chadron, Nebraska, (1906-08). He graduated from the law department of Harvard University, in 1911, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Omaha, Nebraska. During World War I, he served as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Service, (1917-19). After the war, he was president of the Omaha Board of Education, (1927-30) and was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-third Congress, serving (1933-35). Not seeking reelection, he was elected to the United States Senate, serving (1935-41). After failing to be re-nominated, he resumed the practice of law, served as president of the Southern Coal Producers Association and was a representative on the general counsel for Hawaiian Statehood Commission in 1950. He then lived in retirement until his death at age 87.
