Johnnie Marie (Odoms) Armstead was born to Mr. and Mrs. Johnny and Ruby Odoms. She was the first of eight children. Her mother, father, three brothers and one sister preceded her in death.
Johnnie attended public school in San Marcos. She also attended Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. She married her high school sweetheart Albert Armstead in January of 1949. To this union three children were born, Michael A. Armstead and wife, Olga, Adrianne L. (Shelly) Armstead Moore, and Stacey Y. Armstead. Johnnie and Albert were married 59 years.
Johnnie accepted Christ at an early age. She was an active member of the Greater Bethel Baptist Church until her health failed. Johnnie was very active in her community and state. Her accomplishments were numerous, but her greatest love next to God and family was the Calaboose Museum.
Johnnie is survived by three sisters, Nelvia Burleson of San Marcos, Margaret Adams of San Antonio and Gloria Powell and husband, Maurice of Houston and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, cousins and many, many good friends.
The family will receive friends at Pennington Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4. Funeral services will be conducted at the San Marcos Activity Center, 501 E. Hopkins St., at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 5. Interment will follow in the San Marcos-Blanco Cemetery.
