Jazz Musician, Composer. He was an American musician, who was a vocalist, vibraphonist, composer, and arranger. He was one of the more significant contributors to orchestral jazz arranging, writing. During his career, he recorded at least 20 albums including composing the scores to the films "Eye of the Devil" in 1966 and "Who Killed Mary What's 'Er Name?" in 1971. In the ten-year period from 1960 to 1970, he achieved recognition and success with collaborations and affiliations that included Stan Getz, Bob Brookmeyer, Gerry Mulligan, Bill Evans and Anita O'Day for example, and worked on labels such as Verve, Impulse and in a partnership with Cal Tjader and Gabor Szabo, the short-lived Skye Records. His career was cut short when, after having completed work on the Broadway Musical Album "To Live Another Summer-To Pass Another Winter," he went to The 55 Bar in Greenwich Village and was poisoned when the drink he ingested was laced with liquid methadone.
