Thomas was among the first common soldiers buried at Arlington National Cemetery. He left behind his father, Michael Buchanan, step-mother Sophronia Spaulding Surdam, and younger sister Sarah. He was predeceased by his mother, Nancy Ann Streeter Buchanan and his younger brother Derwin, who was also a soldier.
