Received gunshot wounds to the lungs while on picket duty at Cold Harbor, VA on June 4, 1864. He died at Campbell Hospital, Washington DC on August 3, 1864, and was buried that day at Arlington. Thomas was among the first common soldiers buried at Arlington National Cemetery. He left behind his father, Michael Buchanan, step-mother Sophronia Spaulding Surdam, and younger sister Sarah. He was predeceased by his mother, Nancy Ann Streeter Buchanan and his younger brother Derwin, who was also a soldier.
