Poet. Born in Waterloo, Iowa, she published her first book, 'Valentines to the Wide World' in 1959. She would later write and publish such works as 'To See, To Take' in 1970 and 'Near Changes' in 1991, which garnered her the National Book Award and Pulitzer respectively. Ms. Van Duyn, who was co-founder and editor of the literary magazine 'Perspective', became the United States' first female poet laureate from 1992 to 1993. She was described as a "pioneer of the poetry of the suburbs", with latest published works, 'Selected Poems' was released in 2002. It contained her works from the past three decades.
