She was the daughter of George A. Thayer and Ella Briggs. She married to John Bradley Cumings. They were the parents of three sons: John, Wells and Thayer. She survived the sinking of the Titanic disaster but her husband died in the shipwreck. She remarried to Chester O. Swain in 1912.
