Dai Ailian was born in Trinidad but went to London to study dance. Famous names such as Anton Dolin, Rudolf Laban and Mary Wigman were her teachers. She learned both modern dance and ballet which would in later life be of great use to her. She returned home in 1939 when the Anti-Japanese War started and gave benefit performances to the mainland and Hong Kong. Many of these showed her sympathy for the poor and concern for her nation. Her career reached a peak when she became first president of the National Dance Troupe and Central Ballet Theatre and also the headmistress of the Beijing School of Dance.
