Son of Sir Nicholas Bacon (Lord Keeper of the Seal), nephew of William Cecil, brother of Francis Bacon. Due to his family connections and splendid homes - York House in the Strand, Gorhambury House near St Albans - Anthony grew up with the trappings of wealth and power. He was educated at Trinity College Cambridge alongside his brother, becoming a close friend to the Master of the College, Bishop Whitgift.
In 1580 Anthony left England to travel to France, returning to stay with his brother at Grays Inn. Falling in with the Earl of Essex, Anthony became involved with the spy networks that proved so proficient during Elizabeth I's reign. However, upon Essex' fall from grace, Anthony took fear and hid at the house of Frances Walsingham, Essex' wife. He died there and was buried in a vault in the nearby church.
Anthony and Francis were the principal characters in Daphne Du Maurier's 1975 novel 'The Golden Lads', and it was Du Maurier's research that revealed Anthony's resting place.
