HOMICIDE VICTIM

Sgt Armstrong, of Columbia, South Carolina, was a human resources specialist assigned to the 189th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division Sustainment Brigade.

"Spc. Armstrong was an outstanding soldier who was well-liked throughout the battalion and at Garrison Operations," said Lt. Col. Jeremy St. Laurent, commander of the 189th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, in a statement. "She always had a smile on her face, and her attitude and character epitomized what the Army looks for in our leaders. Our thoughts, prayers and condolences go out to her family, friends and loved ones during this very difficult time."

Armstrong joined the Army in October 2012. After training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, Armstrong was assigned in April 2013 to the 82nd Airborne Division.

Her awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Non-commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon and the Army Service Ribbon.

OBITUARY: 1. Iris Denise Smith Armstrong FORT BRAGG, N.C. - Services for Sgt. Iris Denise Smith Armstrong will be held 11 a.m. Monday, July 18, 2016, at First Northeast Baptist Church, with committal to follow in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The public may pay their respects today from 1-8 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m., at Palmer Memorial Chapel. Sgt. Armstrong departed this earthly life Friday, July 1, 2016, at her home in Fort Bragg, NC. She was the oldest of five children born to Gerald Smith and Crystal Reeves Smith in Columbia, SC. Sgt. Armstrong graduated from Richland North East High School, Class of 2010, earned a bachelor's degree in liberal arts from Excelsior College and has been posthumously been promoted to Sergeant.
Surviving are her sons, Jason (5) and Ivan (1 1/2 ); her parents, Gerald and Crystal Reeves Smith of Columbia; a sister, Emerald N. Smith; and three brothers, Julius G. Smith, Aron Smith and Terrence Smith, all of Columbia; and a host of other relatives and friends.

2. Iris Denise Smith Armstrong met her heavenly reward, Wednesday, July 6, 2016, at her home in Fort Bragg, NC. One of five children born to Gerald and Crystal Smith, she always had a smile and kind word for all she met. A proud graduate of the Richland Northeast High School Class of 2010, Iris was also a lifelong member of First Northeast Baptist Church. A Human Resources Specialist in the United States Army, she was assigned to 82nd Airborne Division in April 2013 and is the recipient of such awards and decorations as the Army Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. Iris is survived by her two sons: Jason Earl Armstrong, III, and Ivan Lorenzo Armstrong; her parents, Gerald and Crystal Smith of Columbia; four siblings: Emerald Smith, Julius Smith, Aron Smith, and Terrence Smith, all of Columbia; her paternal grandparents, Willie C. Smith, II, and Clarie Austin Smith of Columbia; two great-grandmothers, Beatrice Anthony Reeves and Bernice Seegars Harris Warren; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
