Notes from High Plains Historical Foundation – see Black Tower internment list at this link: http://curry.nmgenweb.us/blackcem.htm

Mrs. Ellis (Martha F.) Barkley, b. Oct. 9, 1878 – d. July 10, 1909.

>From this note from HPHF I determine Martha's husband's name was Ellis
>Barkley

My research has lead me to determine that Martha died from complications related to child birth. I have followed her husband and daughters on census back to Dekalb, Alabama. Where their youngest daughter Martha J married Alfred L Dupree. She is buried next to Alfred in Mountain View Memory Gardens in Fort Payne, DeKalb, Alabama. Her FAG memorial # is 33572217. Her birth date is the day before the death date of Martha at Black Tower Cemetery. Her birthdate on the social security index is the same as the death date for Martha at Black Tower Cemetery.

Finds from the 1910 census for Black Tower, Curry, NM:
James E Barkley (widowed) b abt 1864 in Alabama Annie A Barkley (daughter) b abt 1902 in Texas Mamie L Barkley (daughter) b abt 1903 in Texas Bessie M Barkley (daughter) b abt 1905 in Texas Martha J Barkley (daughter) b abt 1909 in New Mexico George N Cleland (laborer) b abt 1855 (husband of Syntha)
Syntha A Cleland (housekeeper) b abt 1857 in Alabama (James' sister Cynthia)

Ancestry.com trees: several trees listing James Ellis. b abt 1865 or 1867 to Andrew Lucas Barkley and Nancy Elizabeth Jane Anthony in Alabama. No wife or children indicated.

Finds from the 1900 census Hunt County, Texas:
J S Barkley (single) b Mar 1866 Alabama
(actually document mid initial is distorted and is an "E" not an "S") Jane Barkley (widowed-mother) b May 1838 in Georgia Alvin Barkley (brother) b Aug 1878 in Alabama

Review of the 1870 and 1880 census for DeKalb, Alabama lists father Andrew Lucas Barkley, wife Nancy Jane Barkley, included in the children are James E. (Ellis) Barkley born 1865 or 1867.

Unable to determine from Texas census who Martha was – no marriage license found for James Ellis Barkley and Martha. I will continue digging thru Alabama and Texas for a marriage license and clues as to who Martha's family was.

The family moved back to DeKalb, Alabama. The 1920 census DeKalb, Alabama lists:
Alice Barkley (widowed-head) unsure who this is – perhaps James Ellis Barkley remarried then passed away. His FAG memorial # 53292099
Annie Barkley (daughter) b abt 1902 in Texas Maymie Barkley (daughter) b abt 1904 in Texas Bessie Barkley (daughter) b abt 1905 in Texas Martha Barkley (daughter) b abt 1910 in New Mexico

The 1930 Fort Payne, Dekalb, Alabama census lists the daughters but no Alice and no Annie Mamie Barkley (daughter) b abt 1903 in Texas Bessie Barkley (daughter) b abt 1905 in Texas Martha Barkley (daughter) b abt 1910 in New Mexico
