Pvt. Francesco Barone was a member of the 519th Port Battalion. He was killed on June 10th, 1944 when a German aircraft dropped a bomb on the Liberty ship SS Charles Morgan and sunk it off the coast of Utah Beach. The bomb killed 7 members of the 519th . Frank and Pvt Lionel Ridgeway, an African American soldier, were buried in the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial (NACM). Three other 519th members were never found and their names appear on the Wall of the Missing in the NACM: Privates Richard E. Heon, Frank M. Rodriguez, and George J. Swinehart. Privates James E. Curry and Walter M. Slasinski were also killed and were buried in their hometown cemeteries at the end of the war.
There was one other casualty aboard the Morgan; Able Bodied Seaman Paul O. Hilden from Chestnut Hill, MA, was the only crew member killed. He is one of 13 Merchant Mariners buried in the cemetery and rests in the same plot as Frank.
