Military Theorist. One of the first authors to systematically study warfare, Swiss-born Jomini organized the militia of the Helvetic Republic and served as staff officer in the French army before defecting to the Russian Army in 1813. He would later found the Russian Military Academy. His major theses include the importance of capturing major points, the control of strategic lines, and the emphasis of manuverability over battle. His best known work is "The Art of War" (1836).
