British politician. Born at Bellshill, Scotland. Member of parliament 1974 until his death. Foreign secretary 1997-2001. Opposed the Iraq war. Died from a heart attack at Inverness. His gravestone contains the words:
"Parliamentarian and statesman, beloved husband of Gaynor and much-missed father of Chris and Peter.
I may not have succeeded in halting the war, but I did secure the right of Parliament to decide on war".
