She studied theater at the Goodman School of Northern Illinois University, which eventually landed her roles in local Chicago theater. She graduated to television before making her motion picture debut in "Diary of a Mad Housewife" (1970), which earned her an Oscar nomination. Her role as the "good" wife driven to distraction and adultery by an overbearing husband was right in step with the then-emerging Women's Liberation movement. Snodgress followed Housewife with "Rabbit, Run" later the same year, and then left movies until 1978, when she accepted a role in Brian De Palma's "The Fury" She then appeared, without much fanfare, in a number of films, playing a stalwart frontier wife in Clint Eastwood's "Pale Rider" (1985) and a psychopathic villainess who's stalked by Charles Bronson in "Murphy's Law" (1986), among others. Other credits include "Homework" (1982), "A Night in Heaven" (1983), "Blueberry Hill" (1988), "The Chill Factor" (1989), "Across the Tracks" (1991), "The Ballad of Little Jo" (1993), "8 Seconds" and "Blue Sky" (both 1994). In her last years she was a familiar guest star on television programs like "Judging Amy", "Touched By An Angel" and "The West Wing."
