One of ten children born to Joel and Marija Evonen Riippa in the little town of Winona in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Julia was married twice. Her first husband was Rocco LoFendo, an Italian immigrant to Chicago. One child was born of this marriage. Later, Julia married Benjamin Bloom, a veteran of World War II. He preceded her in death in 1989.
