Nita A. Adams age 82, died peacefully on May 26, 2010 in South Portland, ME, with her family at her bedside. Nita was born on Oct. 31, 1928 in Lakewood, Ohio, the daughter of James C. Addleman and Hazel L. Stout Addleman. Nita was a 1946 graduate of Rocky River High School in Lakewood where she was the president of the Greater Cleveland Girls Friendship International Council. She attended Christian College in Columbia, Mo. and graduated from the University of Ohio in Athens, Ohio.
Nita was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Edward Larabee Adams Jr. They lived for many years at 1850 Washtenaw Ave. in Ann Arbor, Mich. The house is now known as the Adams House. While in Ann Arbor, Nita was involved in many community activities. She was the leader of a Brownie troop, taught Sunday School, served as a member of the Board of Deacons of the First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor, and served on the Board of Directors of the Huron Valley Swim Club. She was a past president of the P.E.O. Chapter G, a member of the University Musical Society Advisory Board, an active volunteer for meals on wheels. Dear to Nita's heart was the Ann Arbor Woman's National Farm and Garden Club where she served as president. For several years Nita served as an active board member of the Ann Arbor Woman's City Club. Nita enjoyed dancing with the self named "Old Ladies Exercise Class" for many years under the direction of her teacher and friend Louis MeKush.
Nita retired to Maine with Edward to join her daughter Susan, in 1984. She volunteered over 1,000 hours for Friends of Maine Medical Center. She was interested in antiques, volunteer activities, dogs, family, and traveling. Nita traveled extensively with her husband to Europe, Africa, and South America.
