Royalty. Duke of Lorraine and Bar (1729 - 1736), from 1737 on Grand duke of Tuscany and from 1745 on Holy Roman Emperor. His marriage to Maria Theresia was very happy and resulted in sixteen children. In 1740 his father-in-law died, and Maria Theresia became Queen of Austria-Hungary, Croatia, and Bohemia. Karl Albrecht of Bavaria followed as Emperor of the Roman Empire. Only after Charles's death in 1745 was Franz Stephan elected emperor. Not very interested in politics, he devoted himself to his natural history collection and coin collection. He also worked intensively and successfully on consolidating the finances of the new House of Habsburg-Lorraine and managed to amass a huge fortune, which his son and successor Joseph II was able to use to reorganize the state budget.
