Dr Dawson came to the Dalhart area in 1907 and built a two story sanitariam which was the first and only hospital north of Amarillo. He treated patients from the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles and New Mexico. He is featured in the recent bestseller "The Worst Hard Time" by Timothy Egan. It is about the struggles and hardships which prevailed even before the Dust Bowl Days of the 1930's.

He is also featured in "High Plains Yesterdays" by his son, John C. Dawson.

Dr Dawson died of a probable brain abcess after being ill for a week and was survived by his wife Willie Catherine (Mitchell) Dawson and their three sons.
