Paul went overseas when the US entered the war. During heavy shelling he took cover but his friend, James B. Wilton, Jr, climbed under the ambulance he was loading. When Jim was wounded Paul went to his aid and was hit by another shell blast while bending over him. Both died at the 185 Dressing Station, Battle was along the Gothic Line at San Clemente several miles north of Morciano. They were with the 5th Hampshire of the 46th Division of the British Army.
On November 11, 2011, He and other AFS members were awarded the Legion of Honour Chevalier, as a Knight, at the Lycee Francais in New York City at a public ceremony. They had sacrificed their lives to save others.
