When Sarah Lou "Sallie" Collier was born on May 28, 1882, in Tyler, Texas, her father, Sylvanus, was 33 and her mother, Sarah, was 29. She had four brothers and five sisters.
Nannie E, Ida, George Jefferson were her older sibings... Sylvanus Edward, Lottie E, Van Stewart, John Welsey, Frances Ethelyn and another Lottie (not sure about this one) were her younger siblings.
Due to the fire that destroyed most of the 1890 census reports in the US the first census report Sarah Lou "Sallie" would not be counted until the 1900 census where the family was found living in Sabine, Texas, she is 18 and living with her parents Sil E 56, and Sarah F 47. Her sibings were Nannie E 28, Edward 20, herself 18, Lottie E 15, Van S 12, John W 9, Fannie E 6. Her dad was a carpenter, her mother is keeping house and the mother of 9 children, 8 are still living, her brother Edward is a barber all other children are at school.
Sarah's mother, Sarah Frances Stewart Collier passed away on December 6, 1901 at the age of 48. The family buried her in the Stewart Cemetery in Doucette, Tyler County, Texas.
In 1910 Sallie L is 26, her father is 65 and now a widow, still doing carpenter work, Sallie has no job listed so now that her mother has passed she has taken over the duties of the home and her brother John W is listed as a laborer doing odd jobs. Frances helps on the farm they live on.
In 1920 Sallie now 35 is single, still living with her father, now 75, a brick mason, her brother George Jefferson 43, has moved back home, but single, he is still a barber, John W, 27 is a laborer working in the oil fields and Fannie, 24, is a music teacher.
On November 21, 1929 the Collier children lost their father Slyvanus Edward Collier at the age of 80. They buried him in the Colmesneil Cemetery in Tyler County, Texas.
In 1930 George Jefferson Collier, 55 is the head of house, single and a house painter. The house is located on Pavilion Street in Tyler County. His sister Frances E. is 40, single and has no occupation. His other sister Sarah is 50 and marrying at 47 has been married for 3 years to Will H Charlton, 65, who is listed as the brother-in-law to the head of house. Will says that he was 27 years old at his first marriage and Sarah said she was 47 at her first marriage, which would be to Will Charlton. This would be Will's second marriage. Will also says he is a farmer on a truck farm?

In 1940 the siblings have moved but give the same address as in 1935 so they moved between 1930 and 1935. They are still living in Tyler County but now living East of Woodville on Turkey Creek. Sarah is listed as Sallie Lou COLLIER 57 and SINGLE??? Her brother George 65, is head of house and their sister Ethelyn (who is Frances or Fannie E in some censuses) is 46, none have occupations but what is so odd is that ten years ago Sallie and her husband Will H. Charlton was living with George and Frances Ethelyn and had been married for 3 years. Now she is single and carrying the Collier surname again. Did husband Will H Carlton abandon Sarah or did he die and she just failed to tell the enumerator that she had been married and was a widow now?
She died on May 13, 1971, in Woodville, Tyler, Texas, at the age of 88. The informant on her death cert was her nephew George E Daniels, son of her sister Nannie Collier Daniels. He stated that she was never married but being her nephew would he have known that if his aunt's husband either died or abandoned her before he was old enough to remember. It appears that she took her maiden name back according to the 1940 census of Tyler, Texas and as it appears on her grave marker. However, her nephew George was 27 in 1930 and 68 in 1971 at the time of her death, he was old enough to have known whether his aunt had ever been married or not???.... was Sarah Lou "Sallie" Collier married to Will H Carlton or not??? Puzzled…. to be solved or not???
