John married three times, first to Emelia Ryan in 1851. Their children were Elizabeth and Joseph. After Emelia's death in 1853 he married Margaret Dwyer in 1855. Their only child was Charles Lucas. Both Margaret and Charles seemed to have died around 1860. John's last marriage was to Margaret Burns in 1861. Their children were Thomas, Mary and Agnes.
[Apparently after 1907 when the newer St Luke's Cemetry opened, John's son Thomas moved the graves of his parents and sister Mary. The stone memorial, that included John's parents, was left behind and a second headstone erected at St Luke's Cemetery]
