Joseph was born on 23 Feb. 1900 to Mack and Minnie Sanders Dalton. He was one of nine children.
Joe served in World War 1. Then around 1919, Joe married Ottice Woods. They had ten children: Monroe, Lurene, Dorothy, Jesse, Joseph, Eugene, Ernestine, James, Mary Edith, and Jessie. At some point Ottice and Joe divorced and Joe moved to West Virginia around 1945.
Eventually he remarried to Kathleen Suttle and they ran a bar near Duo, West Virginia. In 1952, Joe was involved in an altercation in his bar and shot a man and wounded another. Joe was brought to trial and found guilty of murder even though he was acting in self-defense. The probation officer denied him probation in lieu of jail time due to the type of establishment he ran.
While in jail, official reports indicate that Joe took his life on 19 May 1953. He was buried in St. Andrew Chapel Cemetery near his wife's family.
