Sgt. John Verne was a St. Boniface police officer, who was shot and killed responding to a call of a Winnipeg robbery. He managed to overtake the thief's car, but was shot twice in the stomach when trying to approach him. Verne died later that day. The robber was caught immediately and eventually executed.
