BAILEY, Mrs. Walter George (Jessie Annie Hanford)
The Baileys also had a son named Albert Victor, born 1901, who was not on board.
Jessie Annie Bailey, nee Hanford. She was born in Sheepshed, Leicestershire 3 December 1869 to Charles, a carpenter born about 1839 at Shepshed, and Elizabeth (nee Lakin; born about 1840 at Sheepshed) Hanford, who had married 7 January 1866 in Loughborough, Leicestershire. Jessie was christened 20 May 1877 at Sheepshed, aged 7. In 1891, she lived with her family at Loughborough Road in Sheepshed, and was an assistant teacher, aged 21. Her brothers and sisters were Harry, 22 (b. 30 June 1868), Mary Ann, 19 (b. 28 September 1871), and Charles Benjamin, 12 (b. 12 July 1878). She had been employed as a teacher at Newfoundpool, Leicester, and then went to Loughborough where she had been appointed assistant mistress in the infant department of the Roseberry Street schools when they opened in 1897. She worked there until she married in 1901. She married Walter George Bailey 16 February 1901 at Sheepshed in the Loughborough district of Leicestershire, in the Church of England tradition. They had a daughter, Ivy, who was travelling with them on the Lusitania. After their marriage they went to live at Finney Hill and she took up a position as a teacher at the Oaks schools. In 1911, they lived in Shepshed, Leicestershire, England. The Bailey family came to Canada in 1912 and settled in British Columbia, and Mrs. Bailey continued working as a teacher there. The Cunard Line gave their point of origin as Nelson, British Columbia. All three were lost in the sinking of the Lusitania.
