William Blanchard Bancroft: he was an advertising expert employed on a salary and commission basis. According to his passport application, he was going to earn a living as an advertising man in England and was born 10 June 1887 in San Francisco, California. His parents were William Blanchard, a salesman b. 27 February 1847 at Grand Prairie, Missouri; d. 19 July 1928 Oakland, California) and Genevieve (nee Cox; born 2 May 1859 at Lafayette, Indiana, USA) Bancroft. His parents had married at some point before 1876, very likely in California. He had at least four brothers; Burt Earl, b. 13 April 1876, Basil, b. 12 October 1885 in Oakland, Gerald, b. 31 May 1889 in San Francisco, and Kenneth, b. 15 October 1893 in San Francisco. William, Jr., was unmarried. In 1901, the Bancroft family lived at Harley Road in Willesden, Middlesex, England. His father was noted as a publisher and his brother Basil was listed as a clerk. They had a servant living in the household; Eliza Elcome, 21. In 1911, his mother was described as a widowed (? his parents may have been divorced at the time) lady who wrote for magazines, living in St. Giles without Cripplegate, London, England. His brother Basil also lived in England in 1911.William was described as an advertisement representative working for Strand Magazine in 1911, living at Lawinsford Hotel in St. Giles without Cripplegate, London, England. His brother Gerald was an actor and Kenneth was a "traveller books" in 1911. His mother returned to the USA in August 1914. He left Liverpool, England, 19 September 1914 as a saloon (first class) passenger on the Mauretania and came to New York 25 September 1914. He was described as an importer aged 30 and his destination was the Knickerbocker Hotel in New York City; he had gone there in 1913 as well. His last permanent residence was at 2 Great Russell Mansions in London, England, but he expected to return to the USA within a year (of 1915). He was 5'10 ½" tall, had grey-blue eyes, light brown hair, fair complexion and an oval face. The Cunard Line gave his point of origin as New York. He had visited the USA at least once before, in 1913. His last known address in the USA was the Remington Hotel, West 46th Street, New York City. The Cunard Line gave his point of origin as New York. Mr. Bancroft did not survive the sinking of the Lusitania.
