SGT US ARMY - VIETNAM - Awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

READFIELD - Walter William Barton, 62, of Readfield, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011, at the Boston VA Healthcare System in West Roxbury, Mass. He was battling diabetes as well as other complications from Agent Orange exposure from his time in Vietnam, and ultimately succumbed to respiratory failure. Walt Barton was born on Feb. 8, 1949, in Danbury, Conn. He was raised in Bethel, Conn., attended schools there and graduated from Bethel High School in the class of 1966. With the exception of his time in the military, Walt remained in the Bethel area until he and his family relocated to Readfield in 2004.

After high school, Walt enlisted in the U.S. Army, proudly serving his country for over eight years. During his time in service, Walt volunteered for two tours in Vietnam, between 1968-70. Throughout his military career, he earned awards, including the Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and many more.

Walter was predeceased by both parents, Horace "Bart" Barton and Edith (Waterhouse) Barton, formerly of Bethel, Conn.

Walt has one brother, Richard, who lives in Bethel, Conn., along with his wife, Mary. He is also survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Debie (Parks) Barton; his two daughters, Jennifer and her husband, Dennis Hunt, and Heather and her husband, Luis Moran, and grandchildren William, Olivia and Elliot, all of Readfield. He also leaves behind countless nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

Military services will be held for Mr. Barton in the chapel of the Veterans' Memorial Cemetery at 129 Blue Star Ave. (right off Civic Center Drive) in Augusta. (Kennebec Journal 9/29/2011)
