Politician. Pioneer Australian statesman. In 1873, he was a member of Queensland legislative assembly and in 1898, he became the thirteenth Premier of Queensland. He failed in his bid for re-election but under the new Premier, he served as Chief Secretary of the State. Once the Constitution of Australia passed on January 1,1901 he was appointed the first Minister of Defense. He became the first Australian Parliament member to die in office.
