Daughter of Rufus Hampton "Buck" and Harriet Ione Sylvester Low, Harriet and her two brothers, Rufus, Jr. and David, lost their mother shortly after Harriet's birth and only seven years later they lost their father as well when he died from a sudden gall bladder attack in Memphis, Tennessee. The two boys went to live with their father's sister in Sardis, Mississippi for a while and Harriet was eventually placed in the home of her aunt, Eola Sylvester Carnathon, where she was reared until her marriage to Robert Emmett Durst, Sr. about 1931. The couple had four children: Robert Emmett, Jr., John Hampton, Joseph Low, and Delia Harriet Durst. In her later years she lived with her eldest son, Bob, in Vicksburg.
